Happy holidays from (sometimes) sunny Mesa, AZ to all my Alpine SoCal friends and welcome to the Fall/Winter 2019 digital Matterhorn Newsletter.
This newsletter will be my last as your president.
It has been an honor and a privilege to serve with all of you for the last four years.
Now enough about me... I would like to spend the rest of my allotted newsletter space to welcome new board members and send out some acknowledgements and Thank-you's.

This slate of officers was voted in during the recent Pismo Beach Rally on 11/18/19. I was so sorry to be unable to attend but I heard it was a very well attended and awesome (as usual) rally. My personal congratulations go out to the entire board and I especially wish the new president, Scott Hicks, the best of luck. The Alpine SoCal group couldn’t be a more awesome bunch to represent.
Please join me also in acknowledging the outstanding service provided by our outgoing Board members, Treasurer, Rick Fisher; 1st VP Membership, Mary Langord; and FMCA Dir. & Alt Dir., Joel Langord. Thank you so much for all you’ve done (and continue to do) for the club.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our Nominating Committee Members. A huge “thank you” needs to go out to Angel Morales, Susan Vargo, Paul Lisec and Bill Figge. Volunteer positions are the backbone of any organization and the Alpine community clearly has some of the best.
In closing, I encourage everyone to continue supporting the club and our shared success in the enjoyment of our wonderful Alpines (and each other) doing what we love. Remember, the specific purpose of this Chapter is to promote fellowship, camaraderie, cooperation, and enjoyment of the Alpine Coach owners and members!

We have been RV’ing for only 15 years, and have owned our Alpine for 10 of those. It’s our 2nd rig - we started with a class C. We also own a fully restored 1956 Aljoa travel trailer.
Marcia and I started a movie theatre engineering and supply business, and ran it for 20 years before selling to an employee in 2015. During that time we were also active in various business trade/social groups, and understand the benefits of belonging and contributing. In total, I spent my entire career (42 years) working in some aspect of movie theatres.
Other than the obvious travel by RV, other interests for me include Racquetball, tinkering with audio/electronic systems, live mixing audio, real estate, foreign travel, and volunteering.
Our travel bucket list includes an eventual ‘around the country’ motorhome trip without a time frame. Also looking to cruise/land travel through Norway, which is my maternal grandparents’ homeland. We have also talked over the years of traveling to Australia/New Zealand.
I am seeking the position of president of SoCal because I am a joiner. I enjoy taking active roles in support of organizations that interest me. SoCal is one of the best RV social clubs that we’ve experienced. I also realize that taking on a board position will provide impetus to attend more rallies, which is a positive side effect!

I grew up in Philadelphia and graduated college with B.S. in Health & Physical Education. After graduating I was offered the Assistant Field Hockey coaching position at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. While in Lincoln, I began working on a Masters Degree in Athletic Administration and coaching High School Girls Basketball and Tennis. Seeking a new challenge I switched to paralegal studies and soon got my first paralegal position.
In the meantime close friends had moved to San Diego and I began visiting 3-4 times a year. It soon became apparent I’d much rather live in San Diego than Lincoln, Nebraska. I began interviewing and once I was offered a job in San Diego, I moved.
Three weeks before moving to San Diego I was on a vacation in Puerto Vallarta with my California friends. On my flight back to Lincoln I was seated next to Milo. The flight attendant asked me if I wanted a beverage and I replied a Lite Beer. Milo said that sounds good – so I bought him a beer and we chatted the rest of the flight. He gave me his business card as we parted for our connecting flights in Provo and asked me to call him when I got to San Diego – that was June 1990 and here we are 29 years later.
We bought the Alpine in 2006 (our first motorhome). We used the motorhome primarily on weekends and an extended summer vacation each summer. We began attending Alpine SoCal rallies primarily in the extended San Diego region.
When Milo retired in March, 2017 we began to travel more and become more active within Alpine So Cal. I still work, needing to keep Milo in the lifestyle he’s become accustomed to, preserve my sanity, and simply that I love what I do.
I had not planned on becoming a Board member however when Mary needed to step aside I thought I could manage the membership chair duties. It wasn’t until after I volunteered that I learned the position also included 1st VP duties. The reason for becoming a board member was twofold – we very much enjoy being a part of the Alpine family and the recognition that I no longer have to dread that phone call, usually from Bill Figge, seeking members to step up and become more involved.
This fall we checked off one of our larger bucket list items having completed a two week trip driving the ring road around Iceland. This fall, starting after the Williams, AZ rally we will finally have the opportunity to visit the Utah Parks. Bucket list items remaining: the Swiss Alps, St. Petersburg, Russia; Patagonia; Australia and New Zealand.

Thank you for trusting in me to be your new Treasurer. I look forward to serving the club over the next two years.
Dean and I have been RV’ing since 1985, starting out with a slide in camper in the back of our pickup and working our way up to our first motorhome in 1993. We bought our 2002 Alpine Coach, a 34ft FDDS in 2010. It was a bank repo and we knew absolutely nothing about it. We have put about 40K miles on the coach since purchasing it and have enjoyed every minute of it. Most of those miles occurred during the last 3 years since we retired.
My career in Branch Banking spanned 41 years. Starting out as a 17 year-old high school student, I ended up working in many different capacities in the branch. In the end my primary focus was New Accounts and Consumer Lending. Working in Banking afforded me the luxury of working part time so that I could spend time with our 2 daughters, helping in their classrooms, going on field trips, etc.
Besides traveling, I also like to crochet, read, play games, volunteer at our church and spend time with family and friends. I especially enjoy time with my grandchildren who all live close by. Our next big motorhome trip will be next year in late summer. We will be heading to the far North East and taking 3 to 4 months to slowly make our way back to our home base in Ramona, CA.
Being part of the Alpine SoCal Club has been a real blessing in our lives. We have made some wonderful friends and had a great time attending rallies and meeting new people. Up to this point we have hosted a rally and been Co-Wagon Masters, but I felt that the time was right to become more involved. I know that in order for the club to be successful, it is important for all of us to put to use whatever gifts God has given us and to be a part of the clubs success. Safe travels.

I hope that by now all of you have discovered the Christmas “decorations” on the alpinesocal.com website. It is just my way of showing that I do make changes to the website from time to time. Contrary to what many members suspect, I haven’t delegated all of the work of maintaining the website to others. Just most of it! Please check it out.
I hope that most of you know that you can always find the most up-to-date rally schedule on the website. There is also a list of past rallies readily available, as well as links to the ACA schedule. For those who log in to the Members Only section, there is a page with a list of those who have attended each rally since 2008. This list is maintained by my better half, Stephanie.
There is also a list of our members and Honorary Lifetime Members, along with photographs of all members, except for a few who are camera-shy. If you would like to change your photo, please send a new photo to Janet via email, and she will make sure to get it onto the website.
There is also a page with a list of all of our board members, along with contact information links. This will be changing soon, with the recent election of new slate of board members. Thanks to all of those who are helping us to run our club.

It is hard to believe that 2019 is quickly coming to a close. We have had some great rallies this year thanks to all of our great wagon masters. We have visited: Long Beach, California hosted by Fred Masino and Marilyn Fogle, and the Mazzoccos; The Springs @ Borrego, Borrego Springs, California hosted by the Prodanoviches and the Vargos; and Pismo Coast Village, Pismo Beach, California hosted by the Weitzes and the Collinses. We really appreciate all of the work that you all put into these great rallies.
It will soon be 2020 and we have the following great locations all planned out:

Come join us for a great weekend at the Beach. Or you can extend it up to a week by adding 2 days on each side of the rally at the group rate, a great way to stay in a high-end campground for ½ the normal rate. There are a lot of things to do in the area....Laguna Beach, Catalina Island, Balboa Island, shopping, sailing, walking, biking, kayaking, relaxing. We look forward to seeing you all there.

SEPTEMBER 8-15, 2020 RAILSIDE RV RANCH WILLIAMS, AZ (elevation 6765’)
Come join us for a week of fun and camaraderie in Northern Arizona. This is the first time we’ve held a rally in this part of Arizona! The RV park is located 55 miles south of the south rim of the Grand Canyon; 30 miles from the Planes of Fame Air Museum (40 planes from the Chino Air Museum); 60 miles north of Sedona (Red Rock Country, Oak Creek Canyon, easy off-road day trip to the old mining town of Jerome); 34 miles west of Flagstaff (Lowell Observatory where the planet Pluto was discovered in 1930; 25 cliff dwellings at Walnut Canyon Nat’l Monument; ruins of ancient Native American pueblos at Wupatki Nat’l Monument; 900 year old cinder cone at Sunset Crater Nat’l Monument). The town of Williams contains the most well preserved section of Historic Route 66. There are walking tours of town, a Route 66 gas station museum, a bar which has the longest operating liquor license in the state of Arizona and a drive-through animal park (Bearizona) worth a visit just for their “bird of prey” show.
Williams is approximately 500 miles from San Diego, 430 miles from Los Angeles, 725 miles from Sacramento and 290 miles from Tucson. It is a great location from which to extend your trip. Lake Powell (164 miles). North rim of the Grand Canyon (232 miles). Monument Valley (213 miles). Moab, UT (360 miles). Durango, CO (385 miles).
This will be a joint rally with ACA, which means ACA members and SoCal members will receive the rally registration information at the same time. We only have 25 spaces available. So be sure to return your rally registration forms early to ensure a spot!

Final Message to Members from the 2020/2021 Nominating Committee (NC) -
Our THANKS for everyone’s support and involvement during the Election process.
Now that our Slate of Officers has been Elected to Serve for the next Two Years,
it's time for everyone to kick back, relax and support our New Board!! Right??
Well, Partially Right. We definitely want to extend our congratulations to the new Board and to provide all the support we can. But, we also want to utilize the next two years to even further improve the extent to which all members engage in the activities of our Club. “Many Hands” definitely make everyone’s efforts easier and also increase the gratification to all who play an active role. It also strengthens our ability to deepen knowledge among more members of how the Club operates, to respond to vacancies when they occur, and to allow those who wish to serve shorter terms.
So, our appeal to All Members during the next Two Years is to find at least One More Way to get Involved. Here are just a few suggested ways.
- Attend LOTS of rallies
- During rallies, offer assistance to wagon masters
- Submit newsletter article(s) of interest to So/Cal Alpine members
- Be co-wagon masters
- Attend a board meeting to learn more about what goes on
- If you have potential interest in a particular board position, spend a little time with the incumbent to learn more
- Join a quarterly conference call of SARC
- Volunteer to be on the 2022/2023 nominating committee
- Participate in the annual club audit
- Be active in presenting a new membership application when meeting another Alpine owner
- Check the website regularly for rally and other updates
- Offer to take membership meeting minutes at rallies in absence of the secretary
- Look for any one more way to get Involved

A Look Back – the BORREGO SPRINGS Rally

Blue skies and warm temperatures welcomed us to The Springs at Borrego Resort for Borrego Days weekend, October 17 – 21. At the resort, we enjoyed gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains and golf course, immaculately kept grounds, a salt water swimming pool, and natural hot spring spas. Sixteen Alpines attended the rally, including Nellie & John Stiff from Lockford, CA. This was only the second Alpine rally for the Stiffs, who are new NorCal members.
The organized rally activities included a jeep run to the “pumpkin patch,” where I’m told the rocks looked like pumpkins; the Borrego Days festivities which included a 30 minute flyover of vintage airplanes, an hour long parade with “floats” made by local businesses, food trucks & a craft fair at the city park in the center of the only traffic circle in town; a presentation by a naturalist who works for the California State Park system; a picnic lunch to “Fonts Point” which overlooks the “Badlands,” and a ladies tea (as in marTini – vodka, peach schnapps, cranberry juice and a maraschino cherry).
In addition to the organized activities, there were many things to explore in the area. Several groups rode their bicycles into town and around the area. The town of Julian, known for its apple and pear orchards, was a favorite destination for pie. Some of the guys were able to play a round of golf at the only golf course that was open...the official “season” for Borrego Springs is November 1, when all businesses re-open after the long hot summer.
Galleta Meadows is a popular area to drive through to view the lifesize metal sculptures of Ricardo Breceda.
Participating in some or all of these activities, certainly worked up an appetite. And believe me, we were well fed! Arrival night we were treated to sliders - roasted beef tenderloin with brie & roasted turkey with cranberry mayo relish and a homemade broccoli salad. I’m glad Janet enjoys cooking for large groups of people because she is a great cook! Friday’s dinner was catered by a local smokehouse restaurant – pulled pork, coleslaw and cornbread. Saturday night’s potluck included everyone’s contributions and the left over beef tenderloin and roasted turkey. The last night we grilled our own meal and the wagon masters provided sauteed veggies and homemade potato salad. Did I mention how well fed we were????

A Look Back – the PISMO BEACH Rally

Our trek to Pismo was not without its moments. We had new rear tires installed a few weeks before the Rally. After five (count em’ 5) stops to add air to one inside dual, we arrived at the Pismo Coast RV Resort. Jim Archer saved the day when he provided his Clore battery boost (I’ve ordered one!) to jump start our car because by the time we arrived the tow battery was dead. Friday, we had one of the local tire service companies determine that a valve core extension had failed.
And now about the rally itself! Friday evening, we enjoyed meeting everyone and partaking in Splash Cafe's fabulous clam chowder! We had to set the alarm to be up for fruit, muffins, yogurt, eggs, bagels, and oatmeal breakfasts, thanks to our hosts, the Collinses and the Weitzes.
The weather couldn’t have been any better. By now, I'd noticed that our coach was settling on the jacks. That was an easy fix! Re-run the HWH self-leveling and all is well………I think. Sunday was spectacular! We went to Avila and dreamed about parking across the street from the launch ramp - maybe someday. Back at the rig, we were a little shaky again. I asked Sandy Johnson what he thought was going on. One look and he advised that our rear jacks are buried. I didn’t put any pads under the feet! So, I pulled in the slides, disconnected the power and water, moved forward about two feet and reset everything. Lesson learned: with pads under the jacks, the problem was solved! Thanks Sandy!
Monday morning we were treated to a catered breakfast by Rock and Roll Diner, followed by a general meeting. Monday night was our potluck but not the normal case of "gastric roulette." The spread was great, especially Greg Vaughn’s sausage and onions - yum! We enjoyed visiting with Lee Bejar and his family. A great time was had by all.
A big shout out to everyone for welcoming my mother, SeniorRita who came to the rally with us. She had a blast!
And to the reverend Mike Hambarian………. Yup! We are now Rookies!

It Was a Blast!

One of the first things I heard at the Alpine SoCal Rally at Pismo Beach was someone saying they would love to bring their Mom but were afraid she couldn’t handle it. I wondered the same thing… but this group is very loving and accommodating. From the moment I became "SeniorRita" to you, I felt totally accepted. Maybe you can talk your Mom into coming!
It was nice to see the guys assisting each other with rig problems! It was a great learning experience for Steve (my son) and I am sure for many others.
The day we made the cute turkeys for Thanksgiving décor was fun… and I learned a new word, motorhomelessness! Thank you for the great time, Chuck and Barbara. Our Thanksgiving table was beautiful with little turkeys for each of us. My great grandsons assisted in adding to the collection.
Thank you, Patty, for inviting us to play Mexican Train. It was exciting! I had a great time sitting between you and Marlena, the wild one!
The “tea” was great! But I didn’t figure out who donated my lovely “Welcome Friends” plaque, so thank you, “Somebody!” It’s beautiful!
The last morning with the yummy cinnamon rolls was fun when John Schierholtz sat by me. We had grown up in Illinois, both attended the University, and each had a great love for the DC-10. We could have shared stories for hours!
Thank you for including me in all the activities. It was a blast! Maybe I can join you another time!
Our Amazing Experience at the Pismo Rally

My parents, Carmen and Don, own an Alpine motor-home and encouraged Daniel and me to join them at a rally in Pismo Beach. We gladly accepted the invitation and had planned for an easy fun trip.
The first day we arrived was a bit hectic, however, since I had to help my father drive because he broke his wrist the day before our trip. We introduced ourselves and shared my first and very scared attempt at driving such a large vehicle. Everyone started to cheer and applauded my efforts. This reaction made my family and me feel more than welcome despite our late arrival!
We carried on the weekend attending breakfast as a group and planning our relaxing but fun activities for the day. Each night we ended the day by talking with many members on their prized possession vehicles and laughing around the fire pit feeling that we had been friends for years. Daniel enjoyed the weekend, noted how outgoing each member was, and appreciated how they really took the time to get to know us.
We look forward to the next rally and encourage anyone who is new to this club to join because you will not be disappointed!
I Heard it through the Grapevine...
... what happens in Pismo Beach, does not necessarily stay in Pismo Beach...
- The golfing 5-some had a great time on the nice course they played. Some of them didn't play so well but they had a great time playing together. The weather was great, sun shining all day. And they all made it back in time for potluck thanks to Mike Hambarian bribing the starter to let them start an hour early!

- The Archer's roof vent held on by Gorilla tape survived the drive home, and has now been properly replaced.
- The gearheads were kept busy with several issues or problems with coaches
- Technical issues are not the only issues that get resolved at rallies.... sometimes plumbing needs the help of a magic wand... do you carry one in your Alpine basement?
- And while on the subject of plumbing, just for laughs, how about this new upgrade to our coaches... sure would make it easier on those long travel days not to have to stop so often...

We finally got the coach back from a six-week stint at
Cummins in Indianapolis after we were all packed up to leave for a two-week
(Tom would be working) trip starting the 26th of July and ending back home on
August 11th. Our plan was to travel to
the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. However, that fateful Friday the 26th,
the genset self-destructed in the front of the house as we hooked up the towed. Good luck that it didn’t happen on the road?
So, our delayed trip started as they all do, on a Friday
night, October 12th. Our first
stop was around midnight at the Bass Pro Shop at East Peoria IL, passing by a
gold 2000 Alpine parked in the Walmart right next door. As usual, Saturday morning we went shopping to
pay for our boondocking site!
Saturday brought cross and quarter winds of 30-35 mph with
gusts to 45. It made for an interesting
drive with the fuel mileage around 6.5. We lost the front A/C shroud.Saturday night found us at a nice COE park Prairie Flower on Saylorville Reservoir just north of Des Moines, IA. Patty and I both turned 62 this fall so we took advantage of the savings for us and my company, $8. We had a great lake site, the winds died down and were able to catch the sunset.
Wednesday was a travel day of mostly two-lane roads from
Branched Oak to Council Grove KS. We
stopped at a few lookouts that gave us views over the Flint Hills. The Flint Hills are beautiful and there is a
wonderful park, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. We stayed at Council Grove Lake COE Santa Fe
Trail, however Site #1 in Canning Creek Cove is a fantastic site on a point of
land with lake all around. The one to
get if you can. It is an easy 18-20
miles to Tallgrass Prairie NP, and a "must see."
Friday found us headed home on more two-lane roads taking
advantage of the great road handling manners of the Alpine Peak chassis. Did you know there was a town named Tightwad
in Missouri? They even had a bank. No
wonder it failed, they didn’t like to give out loans! We stopped Friday at
another COE- $5 for a primitive site at Harry S Truman Long Shoal right off MO

The Anti-Aging Secret Formula
For those of you who asked about the "recipe" for the cream, here it is:
- one jar of Petroleum Jelly
- one bottle of Baby Lotion (or lotion of choice)
- 2 jars of Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E cream
Mix the contents of all 4 containers together in large bowl using immersion hand blender or electric mixer. It may make it easier to mix the creams and lotion first and then add the petroleum jelly.
Re-fill the empty jars with the mixed creams and store the extra cream in a Tupperware container.
